Technical Tutorial: Quarter Square Triangle

We are launching a NEW series called Technical Tutorial Tuesdays! It is a FUN way to improve your quilting and sewing skills, in easy to bite pieces.

I will share REAL LIFE pattern examples that you can use right away to practice your new skills!

QUARTER SQUARE TRIANGLE (QST):

Step 1: HST Method

Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the lighter fabric square.

Place the marked square on top of another square, RST, and align the edges. Sew on both sides of the marked line using a 1/4" seam allowance. Open and press, then square to the size indicated in the instructions.

Step 2: Choose from the 1 or 2-at-a-time QST Method below:

1-at-a-time QST Method

Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) of the HST squares.

Place the marked HST, RST on top of the second HST, rotating the drawn line to be perpendicular to the bottom HST seam. This will create an "X" with both HST seams. Align the edges of the HSTs and pin the intersection seam. Sew directly on the marked line and trim the remaining QST away at a 1/4" seam allowance. Press seams open and trim the QST unit to the size indicated in the instructions.

2-at-a-time QST Method

Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) of the HST squares.

Place the marked HST, RST on top of the second HST, rotating the drawn line to be perpendicular to the bottom HST seam. This will create an "X" with both HST seams. Align the edges of the HSTs and pin the intersection seam. Sew on both sides of the marked line using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press open and trim the QST units to the size indicated in the instructions.
