RBD Block Challenge 2025 - Week 14: Give It a Whirl

This week, we’re spinning into creativity with Give It a Whirl, a dynamic block designed by Melissa Mortenson of Polka Dot Chair. With its flowing Half Square Triangles (HSTs) and rotating design, this block brings energy and motion to any quilt.

Reflections: Sewing with Purpose

As I pieced together Give It a Whirl, I was reminded of how quilting is like a ripple effect—one stitch leads to another, creating something bigger than ourselves. This block’s movement feels like it’s spinning outward, much like the way we can spread kindness and creativity through our quilting.

For my version, I turned to my  It Takes a Village collection, selecting corals, reds, and soft creams to create a warm, inviting design. The block inspired me to think about the ways we can “give it a whirl” by using our quilting talents to brighten someone’s day.

A Closer Look at Give It a Whirl

Give It a Whirl is a 10" x 10" finished block featuring HSTs and angled squares arranged in a rotating layout. Melissa’s thoughtful design is approachable for quilters of all skill levels and offers plenty of opportunities to experiment with color and movement.

My Take on the Block

Here’s how I brought Give It a Whirl to life:

  • Fabric Choices: I used prints from  It Takes a Village, blending warm reds and corals with soft neutrals for a cozy, vibrant feel.
  • Focus on Flow: The directional layout of the HSTs creates a dynamic sense of motion, drawing the eye around the block.
  • Tips for Precision:
    1. Mark diagonal lines carefully on HST squares for clean, sharp angles.
    2. Use a rotating cutting mat to trim pieces easily without shifting your fabric.
    3. Arrange your pieces on your design board before sewing to ensure the rotation flows perfectly.

Give Back with Whimsy

This week’s block is a beautiful reminder of how quilting can serve as a tool for connection and giving. Here are a few ideas to “give it a whirl” with this block:

  1. Create a Mini Quilt for a Nursing Home: The movement of this design feels joyful and lively, making it a perfect gift to brighten someone’s space.
  2. Donate a Pillow Cover to a Shelter: This block could easily be transformed into a cheerful pillow cover to bring comfort and warmth to someone in need.
  3. Teach the Block to a Beginner: Sharing this approachable block with a new quilter could inspire their own journey into creativity.

Your Turn

I’d love to see how you make Give It a Whirl your own! Whether you lean into bold contrasts or softer, harmonious tones, this block is sure to bring energy to your quilt.
