New to Sew A Story? Visit our Careers page to meet our team and see how we work, our mission and our values.

At Sew A Story, we help families connect through storybook sewing that sparks imagination in children and reawakens a treasured sense of wonder in adults. Every pattern we publish is a small invitation for someone to sit down and make something meaningful. We are looking for a full-time Pattern Writer who loves getting every measurement right, so that invitation feels easy and joyful to the person sewing it.

About the Role

Our design team hands you a well-developed design and clear creative direction. You write and illustrate it into a complete, accurate, production-ready pattern. Your work is mostly quilts, plus occasional easy bags and sewing crafts. No doll patterns are needed.

What You Will Do

  • Write and illustrate each design into a finished pattern using our Sew A Story templates in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
  • Work out block sizing, finished and unfinished measurements, yardage, cutting requirements, layouts, construction order and fabric SKU allocation with our fabric collections
  • Write clear, friendly instructions that follow our pattern style guide
  • Check your own math before each pattern goes to our independent Technical Editor
  • Make revisions promptly and keep your files organized for the next person in the workflow
  • Suggest simpler construction or better fabric use when you see an opportunity

What You Bring

  • Experience writing quilt patterns that have been published or sold
  • Strong pattern math, including yardage and cutting calculations you can verify on your own
  • Working skill in both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign from your first day
  • Comfort completing about four to six or more production-ready patterns a month, depending on complexity
  • Clear, dependable communication and a consistent weekly schedule

Schedule and Location

Full-time and fully remote. We will agree on consistent working hours with you so the team knows when you are working.

Pay

  • Canada: Employee, $25 to $30 CAD per hour (about $52,000 to $62,400 CAD per year), plus benefits
  • United States: Full-time contractor, $25 to $30 USD per hour (about $52,000 to $62,400 USD per year)

Starting pay within the range depends on experience, with a review at 90 days.

How to Apply

Please read these steps carefully. Following them exactly is part of the application, just as following a pattern style guide is part of the job.

1. Send one email to careers@sewastory.com

2. Use this exact subject line:
Pattern Writer Application | Your Full Name

3. In the body of your email, include:

  • A short introduction: who you are, where you live (country and province or state), and why this role interests you
  • Your earliest start date and the working hours you would like to keep

4. Attach three pattern samples you personally wrote, as PDFs or links.

5. For each sample, tell us:

  • The pattern name and type (for example, throw quilt or zipper pouch)
  • What you completed yourself: the math, yardage, cutting instructions, Illustrator diagrams and InDesign layout
  • About how many working hours it took you, from design handoff to a finished first draft

Complete applications are reviewed first. Finalists will complete a short paid practical assessment.

Timing

We are reviewing applications as they arrive, and interviews begin right away. Our hope is to welcome our new Pattern Writer as early as November 16, 2026.

Thank you for considering a place in our story. We would love to hear from you.
