Meet Jennifer

An early childhood educator turned Riley Blake Designs fabric designer. I'm a doll, quilt and craft pattern designer, a mother of four, and the founder of Sew A Story.

My creative journey began in a place you might not expect. I trained to be a professional ballet dancer, spending hours every day training in the studio. However, behind the stage, I found myself captivated by something else entirely: the costume wardrobe.

I was drawn to the artistry of the fabrics, the transformation we as dancers felt when we wore these handmade costumes, and the stories that were created when we danced in those costumes without ever speaking a single word. It was there, learning to sew ribbons on pointe shoes and mend bodices, that I discovered my love for sewing and storytelling through fabric!

Fast forward to my adult years, I used my Early Childhood Education degree to help open up, facilitate and manage a Family Resource Center in our local community for over 15 years. It was here that I saw just how powerful creativity could be in strengthening family connection and shaping positive behavior. I watched parents light up when given simple tools to connect with their children. Equally, children’s behavior changed when they had this short but focused time with their caregiver. That’s when it all clicked. I was facilitating a bridge between imagination and connection through creativity!

At Sew A Story, we help families create meaningful, story-filled projects through sewing, quilting, crafting, and imaginative play. We offer hundreds of patterns for quilts, crafts, and machine embroidery dolls. Each one is designed to make it easy for families to bring creativity into their homes without overwhelm.

BOM FAQs

1. Is the BOM pattern being sold on its own?

Our Sew A Story BOM patterns are designed to be a guided, month-by-month experience, with the instructions released in a way that keeps it simple and enjoyable to follow along. Because of that, the pattern won’t be sold as a standalone download in the shop. We may open the BOM again next year as an at-your-own-pace option, but nothing is finalized yet. If you’ve been thinking about joining, we’d truly love to have you sew along with us this time.

2. Is shipping of the Block of the Month billed every month?

Shipping is charged based on your location and the shipping option you choose at checkout. If you’d rather keep shipping costs lower, you can select the One Fabric Shipment option. With that choice, all of your fabric will ship together in one package at the beginning of the BOM, and then you’ll access the monthly instructions as PDF downloads inside the BOM portal throughout the program. Any special surprises and exclusive bonuses, will be mailed together in the final month at no additional shipping charge.

3. If I make an error or need more yardage, can I buy more from you?

At Sew A Story, our mission is to provide online community and education through meaningful patterns and guided sewing experiences. At the moment, we aren’t set up as a fabric shop, so we can’t take individual yardage or SKU orders through the website. You’re always welcome to email us and we’ll gladly check if we have any leftover fabric from kits, but we can’t guarantee availability. That said, we definitely recommend taking a little extra care with measuring and cutting so you feel confident as you go. Measure twice, cut once. 😊

4. Refund Policy (BOMs)

Sew A Story is a design and education platform (not a fabric shop), and we pre-order fabric for our kits and BOMs based only on registrations. For that reason, BOM purchases are non-refundable once placed. We truly understand that life circumstances can change. If you need to cancel before the BOM begins, we’re happy to offer a shop credit you can use toward a future Sew A Story purchase. Once the BOM has started, we’re not able to offer refunds or credits, since we can’t resell a partial project kit.

Please note: this policy does not apply to monthly subscription boxes or kits. Those can be cancelled anytime before the 1st of the month for immediate cancellation.

5. Can I order extra fabric (for a larger quilt or if I make a mistake)?

Yes, we can often help with additional fabric, as long as we hear from you early enough to add it to our custom fabric order. The best next step is to email us at info@sewastory.com with how much extra fabric you’d like.

In your email, please include your BOM name, your pricing plan (full or monthly), and your shipment option (fabric shipped monthly or all fabric shipped at once). Once we have those details, we’ll confirm availability and send you pricing if we’re able to accommodate the request.
